To be clear: what is happening here is no accident. You dehumanize and otherize people through rhetoric and then policy, and when you see the consequences applying to children, it is easy to condemn it morally as if it were a discrete event, an accident of Americanness. I say the whole system was already unethical under past Administrations, and that this new achievement of American foreign and border policy– to separate children from their parents, and then “lose” them– is no surprise. It is what America acquiesced to, signed on for, stands for today.
