Castro’s legacy was VERY complicated. I see idealistic folks disappointed with our neoliberal capitalist hegemony of materialism and inequality deifying Fidel more than the history deserves. A new inclusiveness, a reckoning with our history of injustice and its persistence, and a functional Sandersian semi-socialist reform and refiguring of institutions where savage inequality exists are closer to what I’d call for. It would be good to recall that Stalin murdered 12 million, and that Fidel brooked no dissent and was nothing if not patriarchal and authoritarian.
